Numerous Tottenham Hotspur players have signed new contracts in recent weeks but it appears as though yet another one could be on the horizon, as Mauricio Pochettino appeared to suggest that Jan Vertonghen will imminently agree new terms, as reported by talkSPORT.

This week right-back Kyle Walker became the seventh Spurs star to sign a new deal in September, adding to fellow defender Danny Rose and midfield quintet Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Tom Carroll.

It seems to be a concerted effort on the club’s part to reward both youngsters and several players who proved to be key players in last season’s title push and Champions League qualification.

And it appears as though the North London side are not done yet, with manager Pochettino suggesting that another is on the horizon, and hinting strongly that it will be centre-back Vertonghen.

The Argentine boss said, as quoted by talkSPORT: “In the next few days maybe one more will appear and then we will see what happens.

When then asked if Vertonghen would be the one to agree terms, he added: “I cannot give names but maybe yes it is a centre-back. All the players that are involved in negotiations it is through the agent but Jan is another player who is in my plans for the future.

“It is important to keep the key players, always under my judgement. They need to feel that we are in a project where we can win everything. Always you know it is difficult to win because only one team can win the Premier League but they need to feel we are serious and consistent and then they need to ask us to stay here, not that we need to convince them to stay.”

Vertonghen has been a key man for Spurs since arriving at the club from Ajax in 2012 and has made 162 appearances in all competitions in the four years since his move.

His current deal is due to expire in under two years’ time and the talkSPORT report claims that the Belgian international has been negotiating a new deal since early this year.
