Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld is set to be out for at least another week with injury.
Mauricio Pochettino has told the Hampstead and Highgate Newspaper that Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld’s injury has been very strange.
Alderweireld picked up a knee injury against West Bromwich Albion last month, and he was initially expected to be out for a short period of time.
However, the Belgian defender has suffered a set back on his comeback – and is still currently sidelined.
Alderweireld will now miss Tottenham’s match against West Ham United this weekend, and Pochettino admits it could be another week before the centre-back recovers.
Toby’s injury was a very strange injury,” he said. “From the beginning we believed it would be a very short process [for Toby] and a short period to be available again and have a full recovery, but in the end it was a very slow recovery.
“The knock he got affected the nerve and the process to recover was very slow. Today he is near to start training with the group. Maybe he will be available in or one week to 10 days more, if all goes well.”
Alderweireld has now missed over a month’s worth of action with Spurs, and it has been a major blow for the North London side.
Tottenham still have the best defensive record in the Premier League, but they have failed to win without Alderweireld in their starting line-up.
Spurs have not tasted victory in their last seven outings, and they have dropped down to fifth place in the Premier League table as a result.
If Alderweireld is back in a week’s time, he may have an outside chance of returning for their crucial Champions League clash with Monaco on 22nd November.
