Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has warned Daniel Levy that players not itching for moves are the ones who aren’t showing ambition.
Some members of Tottenham’s squad rung up Pochettino last summer and suggested that they were keen to leave the North London club.
However, Pochettino suggested to Daniel Levy that these were the players that Tottenham needed to keep.
He explained: “They called me during the World Cup and they said to me, ‘I’m leaving’. I said, ‘Talk to the chairman’. They say, ‘Yeah, but I want to tell you because I’m excited to go and play this or that club’.
“I tell the chairman, ‘Do not trust the player who wants to stay, not the one who wants to leave, because the one who wants to go to a big club often does it because he is ambitious and wants to win titles, and that is the kind of footballer who needs Tottenham because that player is also the one who is going to deliver to the maximum’.”
Despite Pochettino’s apparent calm at Tottenham’s players asking for moves, it may be more concerning for some supporters.
There are a number of high profile players who have been linked with moves away from Tottenham recently.
Both Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen could leave Spurs in the summer, with their contracts running down.
Tottenham may well be able to aid their cause of keeping hold of their key stars if they can progress in the Champions League tonight.
Spurs are set to take on Ajax in Holland this evening, as they look to overturn a 1-0 defeat from the first leg.
