Mauricio Pochettino has admitted to Football London that it has been very tough for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paolo Gazzaniga.

Gazzaniga arrived at Spurs back in 2017, but he has barely featured.

The Argentine was Spurs’ third choice stopper, yet recently he has proven his worth.

Gazzaniga has filled in excellently for the injured Hugo Lloris, and was the hero in midweek, as Spurs progress in the Carabao Cup.

Gazzaniga helped Tottenham beat Watford on penalties.

And Pochettino admits that the 26-year-old is set to start for his side at the weekend.

“Now he is number one. Because it’s not Hugo,” Pochettino said.

Paulo Gazzaniga of Spurs looks on during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on November 5, 2017 in London, England.

“Of course we are so happy, that is why we signed him one year ago. It is so important to have goalkeepers that can play and perform the way Paulo does. It is so tough to be a keeper and wait your opportunity, it is not like a player in different positions that you can play five minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour.

“The position is so specialist than another, it is so tough the time waiting for your opportunity.”

Spurs’ form has been shaky of late, but they did get back to winning ways in their last Premier League match.

Spurs beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1, to ensure that they didn’t fall too far behind the league leaders.

Tottenham’s next outing comes against Huddersfield Town, where they will be expecting to get the three points.
