Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Harry Winks is unlikely to start for Tottenham Hotspur against Huddersfield Town this weekend.

Winks impressed in each of his two starts since returning from injury, against Barnsley and APOEL Nicosia.

And his return to form appeared to be well-timed, amid concerns over fellow Tottenham midfielders Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama.

But when asked how difficult it would be to leave Winks out given his performances of late, Pochettino suggested he might not have a choice.

“I think he is working so hard after his injury last season and he has started to recover his best feelings,” the Spurs head coach told Football London on Thursday afternoon. “I think he was fantastic against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup and two days ago against APOEL the same. He (is) starting to play in his best.

“(But) we must be careful with him because after a lot of time without competition, to provide him with good rest.

“It’s not the same when you have a proper pre-season and you are fit. It’s completely different for him, when he is doing different jobs, to get fit as possible.

“We need to try to give the best solution to try to keep that level and then to be (a) regular and (have) the possibility to play more.”

At the time of Winks’ injury, suffered at Burnley in early April, the Tottenham academy product was enjoying a significant run in the first team, having appeared in all but one of his side’s Premier League fixtures since late October 2016.

His form led to a new five-year deal being signed in February, leaving Winks looking at a seemingly bright future once he returns to peak fitness.
