Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are heavily linked with Steven Davis.

Steven Davis of Rangers celebrates after scoring during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Hearts at Ibrox Stadium on May 7, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Maurice Edu has admitted to The Scottish Sun that he would love to see his former Rangers team-mate Steven Davis return to Ibrox.

Speculation is rife [The Scottish Sun] that Davis could re-sign for Davis for free in January.

The Northern Ireland midfielder, who spent four years with the Gers until 2012, has very little to offer Southampton at the moment or in the future, having started only two games for the Premier League outfit this season.

The 33-year-old, who supported the Ibrox side as a boy, spent four years in Glasgow with Edu, who reckons that his old team-mate would jump at the chance to return.

“I have read that Steve could go back to Rangers and I would love that to happen,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“I had the pleasure and good fortune to play beside Steve Davis so I can speak about the qualities he has and how good a player he is.

“But he is also a great guy and a huge Rangers fan. So I think he would love to go back to Ibrox for a couple of reasons.”

It seems likely that the financial aspect of such a transfer may be on the tricky side.

After all, this is a player who earns £60,000 down South [Spotrac] and it’s very unlikely that Rangers would pay him that over the course of a long-term contract.

He turns 34 on January 1, a number of days after Steven Gerrard’s side face Celtic in a huge Old Firm derby.
