Mark Warburton’s Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers, at the moment, seem a million miles from the Champions League.
First, they would need to pip Celtic to a Scottish Premiership title and even that seems like a long-term project – a very long-term one – if Brendan Rodgers’s side continue to progress.
Second, they would need to win three preliminary ties before they could book their first group-stage appearance since 2010 – again, a very unenvious task, considering how it was far from easy even for a Hoops side this impressive.

But after winning promotion back to the top flight last season following the financial collapse which nearly wiped out the club in 2012, Rangers are much closer to rubbing shoulders with Europe’s finest now than they were, say, four years ago.
And Maurice Edu’s latest Instagram picture might remind the Gers faithful of what they used to have – and what they need to work towards.
The 30-year-old, who spent four years at Ibrox, played the last time Rangers were involved in the group stage of the Champions League, and scored in a 1-1 home draw with Valencia.

The USA international also netted an own goal that night, and Rangers supporters might remember not only holding their own against the Spanish giants, but they missed a plethora of chances to win comfortably.
Those days seem a long time ago now, and lord knows how long it will be before they get back them, but that has to be the ultimate goal and Gers chief Dave King will be determined to bring about a return of those times sooner rather than later.
