Newcastle United’s Matz Sels looks dejected after the match
Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has told the Chronicle he has to improve every detail of his game to keep hold of the number one jersey at the club.
The goalkeeper made the move to St James Park in the summer transfer window as Rafa Benitez looked to add to his goalkeeper options.
The move came as something of a surprise given the stellar performances that Rob Elliott and Karl Darlow put in last season.
The Belgian has made a solid start to life in England, keeping four clean sheets in his nine games so far. He has come in for criticism, though, with some questioning whether his decision making is good enough.

It is something he appears to aware of, admitting he will have to improve moving forward.
“Every week it is getting better, but at the beginning it was difficult,” he told the Chronicle.
“I have to try to improve every detail of my game, and then I can play better and it’s better for me for the national team too.”

Newcastle United will certainly be hoping that Sels can continue to improve so they can keep more clean sheets this season.
Last season the three promoted teams; Burnley, Hull City and Middlesbrough were also the top three teams when it came to the number of clean sheets.
That shows the importance of having a reliable goalkeeper between the sticks and the Magpies will be keen for the Belgian to enjoy a similar record this season.
