Newcastle are reportedly in talks to sign Italian striker Destro.
Just 10 more days remain in the January transfer window and Newcastle United are in dire need of bringing new players to St. James’ Park if they are to stave off the threat of relegation.
Owner Mike Ashley has denied Newcastle the chance to sign players so far this month, but recent reports has suggested that Ashley has engaged in dialogue with Rafa Benitez over potential signings between now and January 31.
If that is something to go by, then perhaps there is truth in Bologna-based newspaper Il Resto Del Carlino‘s report that Bologna striker Mattia Destro’s agent has travelled to England to discuss a move with Newcastle and West Ham.
Italy international Destro, 27, has long been linked with Newcastle and he could be available for a move to Tyneside of indeed east London after managing just 10 appearances for Bologna this season.
With the peak of his career still ahead of him, Destro has huge top-flight experience with a record of 66 Serie A goals in 210 games. Newcastle could do with a striker of his quality to act as competition for Salomon Rondon.
That is because Joselu has failed to do that significantly since his move from Stoke City in the summer of 2017. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the Spaniard is a target for Chinese side Tianjin Teda – according to CalcioMercato.
The report claims Newcastle are in talks with Tianjin over a transfer, with Joselu seemingly flexible this month after managing just seven goals in 49 games for The Toon.
Bringing in Destro and replacing Joselu with the ex-AS Roma and AC Milan striker would be an excellent bit of business. It would give Newcastle hope that they have a striker who is more than capable of scoring goals against the best.
Perhaps having Destro’s quality in the squad could be just what Newcastle need to go on and secure their place in the Premier League for 2019-20.
