Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has admitted to Omnisport that a big-money transfer to Liverpool ‘could happen’ this summer.

The Sun reported last month that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would be in the market for a new central defender and could look at the 19-year-old, valued at £70 million.

De Ligt already plays alongside Reds defender Virgil van Dijk with the Netherlands’ national side.

But the youngster has suggested that he might be open to having him as a club team-mate too.

He told Omnisport: “Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues. Of course you want to learn from him. It’s very useful to play next to him in the Dutch team.

“It could happen [joining Liverpool]. He plays for Liverpool. A nice club. But I’m not focused on this. I focus on Ajax. And then I will see where I will end up.”

De Ligt is one of the most exciting young players in Europe and the prospect of seeing him beside Van Dijk would seriously excite Liverpool fans.

Here’s how some supporters of the Anfield club reacted to his comments.

Klopp might well be in the market for a new centre-back.

Well, he does have Joe Gomez, who is injured at the moment and has a history of injury worries, but beyond that there is only Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

Signing a new centre-back partner for Van Dijk might make sense for Liverpool and if the German boss wants De Ligt, he might be able to get him.
