Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing the Ajax defender.
Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt spoke to reporters yesterday, and named Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk as one of the best central defenders in the game at the moment, as quoted by Goal.
The Reds have been linked with a move for the Holland international over this past year, with the Sun reporting that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the teenager.
The 19-year-old is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in world football already, in spite of his tender years, and he really would be an exceptional addition to Liverpool’s squad.
The Merseyside outfit will face stiff competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs for the 19-year-old’s signature, however, including the likes of Barcelona and Juventus.
De Ligt gave nothing away when discussing his future, however.
The Dutchman did pick out Virgil van Dijk as one of the three best defenders in the game, however, when speaking to reporters, as quoted by Goal:
“I can name three defenders who are very good,” he said. “I think Sergio Ramos is a very good defender. Gerard Pique as well, and of course my compatriot Virgil van Dijk.”
Liverpool will have to spend big to win the race for De Ligt, and even then, that might not be enough, with the likes of Barcelona chasing his signature.
Nevertheless, Klopp should make it his priority to sign the Ajax teen this summer, and he could use his admiration for Van Dijk as a potential bargaining tool.
