Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.
Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has told Voetbal Inside that he can’t reassure fans that he will still be with the club next season amid rumours over his future.
De Ligt, 18, has come up through the ranks of Ajax’s famed youth academy, and has emerged into one of the world’s top young talents over the last 18 months.
The centre back also has five caps for the Netherlands having enjoyed a meteoric rise, which included him featuring in the Europa League final for Ajax against Manchester United last season.
With more than 50 first-team games for Ajax under his belt already, De Ligt is Ajax’s prized possession – and he is unsurprisingly attracting major interest.
Whilst a host of huge European clubs have been linked with De Ligt, Football.London report that Tottenham Hotspur and manager Mauricio Pochettino are lining up a £50million swoop for the defender this summer.
Spurs already have a host of ex-Ajax prospects in their ranks, given that Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen have been mainstays in recent years, whilst De Ligt’s former centre back partner Davinson Sanchez joined Tottenham from Ajax last summer.
With concerns over Alderweireld’s future, Spurs may look to land De Ligt as his replacement – and the defender has left the door open for a move this summer.
De Ligt has told Voetbal Inside that he can’t reassure fans about his future as his situation is ‘difficult’, and whilst he would like to tell Ajax supporters that he will be there next season, he simply can’t do that right now.
“Whether I can reassure the Ajax fans? No, it is very difficult,” said De Ligt. “I would like to reassure the supporters, but the football world is strange. I really do not know and I can not say anything about it,” he added.
