Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min hasn’t been nominated for PFA Player of the Year.
Matthew Upson has told BBC’s Football Focus program that he can’t believe Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min isn’t nominated for PFA Player of the Year.
On Saturday, the six-man shortlist for the individual gong was revealed and the Spurs attacker was not among the names listed.
The South Korea star, who has netted 12 goals and set up six in 27 Premier League outings this season, has been Tottenham’s stand-out player.
And former Arsenal centre-back Upson is astonished to discover that he hasn’t been included.
He told BBC’s Football Focus program: “I can’t believe Son is not in the six, I really can’t. I would be definitely choosing Son, I think he has been absolutely outstanding.”
You can understand why Son isn’t there. Yes, he has been Tottenham’s best player this season, but look at who he is competing with.
Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Eden Hazard, Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero are the nominees. Has Son been as influential for the North Londoners as those six for their respective clubs since August?
The truth is that the 26-year-old didn’t open his account for the Lilywhites this season until October 31 in a Carabao Cup win over West Ham, scoring twice. He didn’t find the net in a Premier League game until November 26.
Son, who has five league goals in 2019, has been outstanding in the Champions League, helping Mauricio Pochettino’s side reach the semi-final earlier this week, but he hasn’t been one of the best domestic players from August until May and that’s likely why he was omitted.
