Matthew Pennington has been quoted by TWTD as saying that he wants to break into Everton’s first team next season, despite only just joining Championship side Ipswich Town on loan this summer.

The 23-year-old defender was way down the pecking order at Goodison Park this summer after Marco Silva completed the signings of Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma, adding to Phil Jagielka, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane.

Pennington had been linked with a move back to Leeds after his loan with the Whites during 2017-18, but he has since joined Ipswich where he was left on the bench for his first match against Rotherham, before playing against Norwich.

The England youth international is looking to give his all for Ipswich but made it more than clear that his goal is to remain at Everton and break into the senior side – but he did admit that he may have to move on permanently.

“I hope to go back to Everton a better player,” Pennington said. “That’s one thing I want to achieve as a result of going out on loan, even if my future isn’t at Everton, if I improve it could lead to me moving somewhere and that would be brilliant.

“It seems to be the way it works these days with young players at the Premier League clubs. You get your experience, improve and show people what you’re made of through going out on loan.”

Pennington has clocked up nine appearances for Everton’s senior side and is remembered most for scoring his only Toffees goal in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool – though they lost 3-1.

Along with Leeds, Pennington has also played for Coventry City, Walsall and Tranmere Rovers on loan. The central defender has three years remaining on his Everton contract.
