West Ham United lost 2-0 at home to Manchester United on Monday evening.

Former West Ham United winger Matthew Etherington has taken to Twitter to hail playmaker Manuel Lanzini for his performance against Manchester United.

The Hammers went into Monday’s game with United having lost 1-0 to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon, and were hoping to hit back with a win over Jose Mourinho’s side.

However, West Ham were almost immediately at a disadvantage, as Sofiane Feghouli was controversially sent off for a 50/50 challenge with Phil Jones after just 15 minutes.

It took the Red Devils a while to make their advantage count, but Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit second half goals to claim all three points.

Another home defeat will have been a huge blow for manager Slaven Bilic, but the circumstances meant it was always going to be a tough ask once Feghouli was sent off.

After the game, former West Ham winger Matthew Etherington took to Twitter to offer his view on the performance, and had real praise for one player in particular.

Etherington suggested that the display from West Ham was ‘decent enough’, but slammed officials for getting key decisions wrong, such as Feghouli’s red card and the clearly offside goal from Ibrahimovic.

Etherington added that Hammers playmaker Manuel Lanzini was ‘outstanding’ during the defeat, with the Argentinian putting in arguably his finest performance of the season so far, creating chances for his team-mates and looking dangerous himself, even outshining team-mate Dimitri Payet.
