Aston Villa and Liverpool are just some of the clubs keen on Southampton defender Matt Targett this summer.

Aston Villa and Liverpool are keen on the services of Southampton’s £10 million-rated defender Matt Targett this summer, according to The Sun and 90min.

Left-back Targett has played second fiddle to Ryan Bertrand in recent seasons and he would be a smart addition to whichever club he joins.

But if the 23-year-old had a choice then he should pick Liverpool over Aston Villa because of what they would be offering in terms of challenging for titles.

Whilst the logical step would be to go to Villa because they would offer him regular game time, surely the youngster can’t turn down the chance of joining the European champions?

Targett would play second fiddle to Andy Robertson, but given time under Jurgen Klopp, Targett could perhaps take his game to much higher levels than if he were to move to the Midlands.

There’s no doubt that Liverpool need some cover at left-back because Robertson will be the only recognised player in that position for next season and if the club don’t bring in another specialist player then the Scotsman will have his work cut out.

Given the amount of games Liverpool play, how deep they go into competitions, and Klopp’s record of improving players, Targett would still get sufficient games time to make a name for himself if he settles in well at the club.

It remains to be seen what he will do this summer because the attack-minded fullback will attract interest given his talents and what he did at Fulham two seasons ago. But he would be daft to turn down Liverpool, at this moment in time.
