Newcastle United are currently top of the Championship table.
Newcastle United star Matt Ritchie has told the Chronicle he is hoping that the club being top of the Championship at Christmas proves to be a good omen.
The Magpies have been highly impressive in the first half of the campaign and are currently a point clear at the top of the table, a place they will occupy at Christmas.
It is a good place for them to be in, with history showing that the side top at Christmas in ten of the last 12 seasons has gone on to secure promotion.
And Ritchie is hoping that proves to be a good omen for him and his team this time around.
“It’s fantastic that we’re top for Christmas,” he told the Chronicle.
“In the past, it’s been a good omen. Most teams that are top at Christmas have gone on to get promoted. Hopefully, that can be us.”
If Newcastle are to secure promotion this season they will need to continue to show the consistency they have already.
At one point it looked like this campaign would be an easy one for them and while nine points separate themselves and third, that could change quickly.
It is something manager Rafa Benitez will be acutely aware of and he will be keen to avoid any complacency setting in as a result of his side’s lofty position at this moment in time.
