Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie has admitted in the Shields Gazette that he is ‘devastated’ to have missed a sitter in his side’s last match.

Newcastle beat Burnley 2-1 on Monday evening, but they could have won by a greater margin had Ritchie scored a gilt-edged opportunity.

Ritchie ran on to the ball at the far post, but somehow skewed his shot wide of the post from three yards.

And the Scottish international admits that he feels gutted about not hitting the back of the net, despite Newcastle’s win.

“I’m devastated to miss an easy chance like that. I love scoring goals, and I’ve not got one yet this season. Let’s be honest, I’m not going to have too many chances like that again,” Ritchie said.

“It will certainly prey on my mind to get a chance like that and not take it. That’s frustrating, but, most importantly, we’ve picked up a fantastic result and now we keep going. There’s a good feeling inside the dressing room after a performance like that – that’s the most important thing.”

The £55,000-a-week winger’s (Telegraph) miss meant that Newcastle had to suffer a nervy ending at Turf Moor, but they held on to the three points.

The Magpies held strong, as Burnley ramped up the pressure in the final stages, with a series of long-balls.

Newcastle now have won three matches on the bounce, with Rafael Benitez’s side making good progress up the Premier League table.

Newcastle are next in action on Saturday evening, when they take on West Ham United.
