Matt Ritchie has started in all but four of Newcastle United’s Championship matches this season.
Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie has admitted to the Shields Gazette that he has been left disappointed at times by Rafael Benitez’s selection policy.
Benitez has regularly rotated Newcastle’s team this season, to ensure that his side remain fresh.
Although Ritchie has still been in Newcastle’s starting line-up more often than not, he has missed four matches.
And the former Bournemouth man admits that it is hard to accept being left out.
“I don’t think the players ever (fully) buy into it, because players want to play every game,” he said.
“But at the same time, you probably have to bite the bullet and understand that the manager is doing the best for the team.
“He will see the team through and is our leader, so we need to buy into his philosophy.
“If I’m left out, I’m still disappointed, because I want to play.”
Ritchie has made an excellent start at Newcastle, and already has four goals and six assists.
The Scottish international has settled in quickly at St. James’ Park, and already has a key role to play for Benitez’s side.
Ritchie looks likely to start in Newcastle’s upcoming match against Birmingham City on Saturday.
If Newcastle can get the victory it will end a three-match winless run for Benitez’s side, and help consolidate their position at the top of the Championship table.
