Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers wrapped up a fifth January deal today.

Matt Polster has told Rangers TV that he is ‘ready to play’ following the announcement of his move to Ibrox.

The 25-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Gers [official website] to become Steven Gerrard’s fifth January signing.

Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis both joined Rangers on loan, while Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones penned pre-contract agreements and will arrive in Glasgow this summer.

Polster, who joined from Chicago Fire, is a versatile United States international, having been capped once by his country.

Here’s what he told Rangers TV upon joining: “It’s something I always dreamed about doing. As a little boy, a lot of people know I always wanted to play in Europe, and to finally do it at this type of club, I’m speechless really.

“My fiance and I just went to Paris to get our work visas and we were finally able to fly back here. Now that it’s all signed and sealed, I’m ready to play.”

He might be ready to play, but will he?

Polster can play both right-back and midfield, but competition in both positions is fierce. He has James Tavernier to compete with on the right-hand side of defence, a player he won’t dislodge any time soon, while Gerrard has an abundance of quality central midfielders at his disposal.

It seems likely that he is joining Rangers as a squad player initially, but hopefully for his sake he can contribute when called upon to do a job.
