Leeds United will be looking to get back into the automatic places when Marcelo Bielsa’s side take on Brentford on Monday afternoon.
Sky Sports pundit Matt Murray has insisted that it’s ‘not patronising’ to clubs like Sheffield United and Norwich City that the neutrals want Leeds United in the Premier League.
It has been 15 years since Leeds tasted top-flight football and under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa this season, they have come the closest they have ever come to ending that barren run.
Speaking to Soccer Special (19/04/2019 at 2:25 pm), former Wolves goalkeeper, Murray was asked whether it’s patronising to teams like Sheffield United that others want Leeds in the PL. He issued this response and commented on the fans.
“It’s not patronising [to teams like Sheffield United that people want Leeds in the Premier League],” Murray told Soccer Special. “What I think anyone in football agrees is Leeds is such a huge club.
“Whenever we commentate on Leeds, no matter how they are doing, their following is unbelievable. When you go on holiday with your friends and they play for Leeds United, their fans are everywhere. All over the place because of their history.
“You do feel for Leeds a little bit. I remember when they won the league before it became the Premier League – Leeds fans have been through a lot, yet they have stuck with them and travelled with them. When you go to commentate at Elland Road, it’s absolutely rocking.
“Is it a Premier League club? Yes. Are there many clubs bigger than them in English football? No. That’s why people would say, and with Bielsa coming up and the style of play, the Premier League will be better with them.”
On Friday, Leeds slipped up big time in their race to finish in the top two after 10-man Wigan, who are fighting relegation beat team 2-1 at Elland Road.
It was a damaging defeat for Bielsa’s side because earlier on in the day, Sheffield United beat Nottingham Forest to go above them in the table on goal difference.
Both teams will be in action once again on Monday with Leeds taking on Brentford at Griffin Park and Sheffield United visiting Hull City.
