Leeds United may now have to prepare for the playoffs after losing at Brentford on Monday afternoon.
Matt Murray has questioned Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa and the manner in which he has managed the workload of his team this season.
The Sky Sports pundit used last season’s Championship winners Wolves as an example and stated that they ‘worked hard’ as Leeds have done this term, but their manager Nuno Espirito Santo managed the workload in training.
On Monday, Leeds suffered their second defeat in as many days when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at free-flowing Brentford.
Speaking to Soccer Special on Sky Sports News (22/04/2019 at 2:15 pm), former Wolves goalkeeper, Murray stated the one area where he would be critical of Bielsa.
“That would be my criticism of Bielsa,” Murray told Soccer Special. “You listen to how hard they train and how hard they work.
“Now, Pukki has scored a lot of goals and I’m pretty sure he’s fit for nearly every game. Bamford, a lot of injuries, but you have got to manage the load.
“Wolves last season, their players were fit. All the time. Everyone to choose from. They trained hard and they worked hard. But the load was managed in training so they’re peaking for games. That is the one bit I would question that sometimes has he managed the load in training right.”
There is no doubt that Bielsa’s team is one of the most hardworking and demanding teams, not just in this league, but in Europe.
Following those defeats in recent days, it now seems that Leeds will be heading into the playoffs and a top-two finish is now looking very slim.
They would need second-placed Sheffield United to lose at already-relegated Ipswich on Saturday, whilst they themselves would need to beat Aston Villa, who have won 10 games on the bounce.
