Wolverhampton Wanderers will host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday night.

talkSPORT pundit Matt Murray has admitted that Ruben Neves ‘started the season a little slowly’ for Wolves, but he is now ‘proving’ what type of player he is.

The 21-year-old signed from Porto during the summer of 2017 when the then-Championship outfit snapped him up for £16 million, according to BBC Sport.

Since his arrival, the midfielder has impressed one and all at Molineux, showcasing his quality in the middle of the park from his technical qualities to his ability to pick out any type of pass.

Former Wolves goalkeeper Murray stated that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side could be a ‘real force’ in seasons to come if they can keep hold of their star players.

“Neves has got right back at it now,” Murray told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on 11/02/2019. “He started the season a little slowly. But now he is back at it and is proving what a player he is.

“If we can keep these players at Wolves then they could go onto be a real force to be reckoned with.”

Portugal international Neves has played 25 games in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and supplying his teammates with two assists, according to transfermarkt.

In terms of goals, and in particular assists, Neves’ numbers are not high, but his stats do not back up the influence he has on the team from midfield.

Neves has the quality to dictate the pace of the game, showcase a large variety of passing skills and if need be score a long-range effort.

Nonetheless, he will now be preparing for his side’s Premier League clash against relegation-threatened Newcastle on Monday night.

Nuno’s side are sitting in seventh place, one point ahead of eighth-placed Watford as three points can see them open up a gap on their rivals.
