Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has escaped FA action after stepping on Reading opponent Nelson Oliveira.

Oliveira was left with a gashed and bloodied face and had to undergo surgery, Sky Sports reported.

BBC Sport report Mings will face no further action, as it was an incident the referee saw and did not act upon. The association’s own rules do not thus allow them to punish the defender retrospectively.

The FA’s ineffectiveness adds a new layer to a controversial situation, with BBC Sport describing Oliveira as suffering ‘serious facial injuries’.

Former Southampton ace Matt Le Tissier weighed in on the incident.

He said on Twitter that if Mings really wanted to, he could have avoided Oliveira.

Only Mings knows if he could have avoided Oliveira, and he has subsequently expressed his sympathy for the Reading striker, with BBC Sport reporting he says ‘nobody feels worse than him’ over the coming together.
