West Bromwich Albion have been linked with a move for Odion Ighalo, but Matt Le Tissier has urged the Baggies to steer clear.

Matt Le Tissier answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Matt Le Tissier has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (broadcast on 13th January 2018 from 12:00 pm) that West Brom should steer clear of Odion Ighalo after it was reported by the Birmingham Mail that he could come onto their radar during the January transfer window.

Ighalo currently plays in the Chinese Super League, but Sky Sports reported last week that he would be interested in returning to the Premier League nearly a year after he left Watford.

Sky Sports suggested that his £20 million release clause could have to be triggered, and the Birmingham Mail has since suggested that the Baggies may tempted into the race. But Le Tissier has suggested that it would be a poor move from Alan Pardew’s men to spend such a significant amount on Igahlo given his form during his time in England.

“I think he probably would for that kind of price,” he told Soccer Saturday when asked if it would be too big a gamble for West Brom to meet the striker’s asking price.

“I think that’s a lot of money to pay for him. He had a good start at Watford a short spell but after that he was absolutely woeful so £20 million for me, for that kind of player, I think would be way over the top.”

As Le Tissier alluded to, the Nigerian was brilliant during his first two seasons with the Hornets, scoring 35 goals in 72 league appearances as Watford secured promotion and then kept themselves in the top flight during that first year back at the highest level.

However, his form dipped significantly during his final months with the club, with just one league goal coming in 18 games, so Pardew will undoubtedly be taking a gamble if he decides to pursue a deal this month.

But if he rediscovers the form that he showed during his first two years in England, potentially spending £20 million on the 28-year-old may prove to be an absolutely inspired deal.
