Speaking to Sky Sports’ programme Good Morning Sports Fans, broadcast at 09:48 on Monday February 20th, Saints legend Matt Le Tissier discussed the importance of Sunday’s EFL Cup Final against Manchester United, and suggested that a decent cup run has been the only thing missing from their otherwise fantastic progression as a football club over recent years.

Claude Puel’s men have been inconstant to say the least in the Premier League so far this season, and currently sit in 11th position in the table after 11 defeats in 25 games, but they have been sensational during their EFL Cup exploits.

Southampton’s only major trophy came with their FA Cup win in 1976, and their fans are desperate for some silverware to supplement their undoubted progression as a football club on the whole.

And Le Tissier, who made 543 appearances for the south coast club, highlighted how important this year’s cup run has been for his former team, when speaking to Sky Sports:

“It would be a fantastic step forward for the club. They have got their league position better over the past seven years, and the one thing that was missing was a decent cup run. They’ve got themselves to the cup final – the first chance in 41 years to win a major trophy, and it would be another building block in the way that the club want to see themselves as a successful club who are challenging for Europe every season.”

Sunday’s final against United will be no easy task, however, with Jose Mourinho’s side currently England’s in-form team, with their renewed sense of confidence and vigour being highlighted by just one defeat in their last 24 games in all competitions.

On their day though, Southampton are a match for anybody, and their fans will genuinely believe that 2017 could very well be the year that they end their long wait for a major trophy.
