Southampton officially announced Mark Hughes as their new manager last night.

Matt Le Tissier answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, in the aftermath of his former club appointing Mark Hughes as their new manager, and suggested that the Welshman’s extensive experience of managing in the Premier League would have been the main contributing factor behind him getting the job.

The Saints are currently in all sorts of trouble, and sit in 17th position in the Premier League table, just one point clear of the drop zone, having won just five league games all season long.

Mauricio Pellegrino lost his job on Sunday, after seemingly losing the dressing room at St Mary’s, and with just eight league games remaining this season, the Southampton board felt that the time was right to instigate a change.

Le Tissier spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, and explained how Hughes’ experience in managing at the very highest level for such a prolonged period of time could prove to be crucial to the Saints:

“Mark has managed in this league for a long, long time, more than 400 games. I think it is a pretty good appointment from my perspective. The situation we are in is not a great one and we don’t need a manager coming in who doesn’t know the players, doesn’t know the league. So Mark would seem to be with the club’s way of thinking.”

Hughes’ first point of call is an FA Cup clash with Wigan Athletic on Sunday, before they face a crucial trip to West Ham United in the Premier League two weeks later, and wins in those two games would be the ideal way for the Welshman to begin his reign on the south coast.
