Matt Le Tissier discusses Southampton re-signing Luke Shaw, believes Spurs move obvious

Luke Shaw looks set to leave Manchester United this summer.

Pundit Matt Le Tissier has told Sky Sports that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur are the ‘obvious’ destination for Manchester United defender Luke Shaw – and ruled Southampton out of the race.

Shaw, 22, was one of English football’s hottest young talents when he burst onto the scene with Southampton in the 2013-14 season, and earned a big-money move to Manchester United at the end of the campaign.

The left back hasn’t quite lived up to his billing at Old Trafford though, with injury and fitness problems plaguing him, whilst he has never managed to convince manager Jose Mourinho either.

Saturday’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion appears to have been the final straw for Shaw, as he was handed a rare start in the FA Cup tie, only to be substituted at half time and then subjected to an astonishing tirade from Mourinho.

Shaw appears to be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, and whilst he hasn’t really kicked on from his Southampton days, there will surely be a host of managers queuing up to secure his signature.

One club heavily linked with Shaw is Tottenham Hotspur, given that manager Mauricio Pochettino coached Shaw at Southampton, and guided him to the best season of his short career to date.

Now, pundit Matt Le Tissier has told Sky Sports that he thinks a move to Tottenham is ‘obvious’, as it would also allow Danny Rose to return to the north and sign for Manchester United, heading in the opposite direction.

Le Tissier added that he doesn’t think Southampton stand much of a chance of re-signing Shaw given the wages on offer elsewhere and the fact that the defender may see returning to St. Mary’s Stadium as something of a step down.

“Having worked with Pochettino before and spoken highly of him, it would seem obvious for him to go to Tottenham with Danny Rose potentially going the opposite way as he is obviously desperate to get back up north,” said Le Tissier.

“I don’t think Southampton could compete in the wages department and the player would probably look at it as a backward move, so he would probably think he is worthy of playing for a club competing for the Premier League title,” he added.
