Southampton have already offloaded striker Guido Carrillo.
Southampton have allowed January signing Guido Carrillo to join Spanish side Leganes on loan – and Matt Le Tissier has defended the club’s decisions over the striker.
The Saints undoubtedly needed goals last season, so when the January transfer window came, then-manager Mauricio Pellegrino swooped to reunite with striker Carrillo.
The pair had worked together at Estudiantes in their native Argentina, and he did show some promise there with 42 goals in 141 games as a youngster to earn his 2015 move to Monaco.
Carrillo was far from prolific for the Ligue 1 side, scoring just 15 league goals in 65 games, and yet Southampton splashed out a staggering £19million to sign him in January, as reported by BBC Sport.
Few were surprised by what followed; Carrillo failed to score in seven Premier League appearances, and played just seven minutes of league action after Pellegrino was sacked in March.
Southampton decided over the weekend to allow Carrillo to leave, and he has reunited with former boss Pellegrino again, this time penning a season-long loan deal to work under him at Leganes in Spain.
Carrillo may yet turn his Southampton career around, but at £19million and just 452 minutes of Premier League action to his name, he may go down as one of the worst Premier League signings in history.
Some criticised the club’s decision – after all, they backed Pellegrino with a huge signing that he specifically wanted only to sack him weeks later – but club legend Matt Le Tissier has taken to Twitter to defend the club, stating that they shouldn’t be criticised for backing the manager, even if Carrillo’s time on the South Coast was a complete disaster.
