Matt Le Tissier has said on Sky Sports that Davinson Sanchez deserved his red card in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Watford.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender was given his marching orders on 52 minutes for a perceived elbow on Watford winger Richarlison.

Such an incident divided Spurs on Twitter, with many claiming that it was a poor decision by referee Martin Atkinson, while others agree that the Colombian centre-back had to go.

And although Le Tissier admits it wasn’t as bad as he first thought, the Sky Sports pundit maintains that Atkinson was right to dismiss Sanchez.

He told Sky Sports: “He just got himself in a poor position. Richarlison knocked the ball over the top of him and he [Sanchez] has just clothes-lined him.

“It didn’t look to me on first viewing as if it was a proper elbow in the face – it was more of an arm and a slap in the lower part of his face, just under his chin, so Spurs will probably argue that a yellow card was probably enough.

“Personally [I thought] it was a poor challenge and he shouldn’t have given the referee the opportunity to do that [send him off].”

Tottenham did well pull the Hornets back as Son Heung-min grabbed a 25th-minute equaliser to cancel out Christian Kabasele’s earlier opener.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have now won only one of their last six Premier League games – a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley – and with Sanchez ruled out for three games, it seems likely that a shaky Tottenham defence will continue to struggle without him and Toby Alderweireld there to plug gaps.
