Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (12:45pm, May 4, 2019) why Jonjo Shelvey has not been playing for Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Shelvey made his first start for Newcastle for six months against Brighton and Hove Albion last month.

The 27-year-old midfielder played well, although he started the weekend’s Premier League match against Liverpool at St. James’ Park on the substitutes’ bench.

The former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder has been struggling for playing time for the Magpies this season, and Sky Sports pundit Le Tissier believes that it is due to the England international not running and working hard enough.

Newcastle United's Jonjo Shelvey arrives before the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James's Park, Newcastle on Saturday 20th April 2019.

Le Tissier said about Shelvey’s running on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (12:45pm, May 4, 2019): “I think that’s something that the manager would have had to have a word about.

“There is a reason why he has not started a game for months, and it’s this side of the game that the manager obviously felt he needed to improve upon because we know that he has got ability.

“But to get into Rafa’s team, it looks like he has been told, ‘Unless you run around son, you won’t be playing a game.’”

Stats

Shelvey made 25 starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle last season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

This campaign, the England international has made nine starts and six substitute appearances in the league for Rafael Benitez’s side, providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.
