Leeds United won against Bolton Wanderers at the weekend, but the situation surrounding the penalty did not please Southampton legend and Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier.

When Leeds were awarded a penalty in the first half of their Championship game against Bolton at Elland Road this past Saturday afternoon, Tyler Roberts, Patrick Bamford and Pablo Hernandez all wanted to take it.

In the end, it was Bamford who took it – and scored, with Leeds going on to win the match 2-1.

Former Southampton and England international attacking midfielder Le Tissier was following the match for Sky Sports, and he was not pleased with the situation.

Le Tissier said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News last Saturday (5:43pm, February 23, 2019): “So when the penalty gets given, when I saw the replay, it wasn’t just Tyler Roberts who wanted to take the penalty.

“There was also I think Hernandez also wanting to take it, so the two of them were arguing with him (Bamford) as to who was going to take it, so there was a three-way argument about who was going to take this penalty.

“Bamford picked up the ball first and was just having none of it. He was taking the penalty, and Luke Ayling came in and got the lads out the way. I don’t know why it happens, it frustrates me every single time.

“Surely before the game the manager names who the penalty taker is. There’s no way you should be having arguments as to who is taking the penalty when one gets given. It just puts unnecessary pressure on the penalty taker.”

Situation needs sorting

Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa needs to sort the penalty situation and has to appoint a designated penalty taker.

True, Bamford scored, but the former Middlesbrough striker could have missed it, and it would have then created problems among the players.

Leeds will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Queens Park Rangers away from home at Loftus Road in London in the Championship.
