Should Liverpool fans have strengthened their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign?
Matt Le Tissier has aimed a jibe at Liverpool and claimed that their lack of spending was down to the fact that Southampton struggled in the Premier League last season.
In years gone by, Liverpool have signed a number of Southampton players from midfielder Adam Lallana to centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
Last season, the Saints, who started the season with Mark Hughes, sacked the Welshman and replaced him with Ralph Hasenhüttl as they finished in 16th place.
Speaking to Deadline Day on Sky Sports News (08/08/2019 1:55 pm), Southampton legend Le Tissier shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s decision not to spend this summer.
“I don’t think it is a coincidence that Southampton had a poor season last year and Liverpool don’t buy anyone,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports News.
“Phil Thompson always tells me, and he was there during the glory years, whenever you are on top, you have got to keep strengthening. And if you are chasing you have to do the same.
“I know the gap wasn’t very big last season, but with City improving, you still look at the Liverpool squad and you do think. Do they have the strength in depth that Man City have to challenge over a 38 game season? And, at the moment, looking at it, you would say City are stronger in that department.”
Last season, Liverpool narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title, but they were crowned champions of Europe in June.
Jurgen Klopp’s found it difficult to dethrone Manchester City last term, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they find it even more difficult ahead of the new campaign.
