Sky Sports pundits Matt Le Tissier and Charlie Nicholas expect Newcastle United to be relegated from the Premier League this season.

After an impressive start to life back in the top flight, the Magpies have sunk to 16th in the table with a run of seven defeats from eight games.

However, Le Tissier and Nicholas do add a caveat that a potential January takeover could change the complexion of Newcastle’s campaign.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “If Newcastle don’t get this takeover done and get Benitez some funds in January they are going down because of their lack of goals.”

Le Tissier also has concerns over Newcastle’s strike force and adds that any new funds must be spent on a centre-back and a goalkeeper as well.

Joselu of Newcastle United reacts during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth at St. James Park on November 4, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

He is quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “My third side are Newcastle, but that is based on the squad they have at the moment. If they get some investment in January and can get a new goalkeeper, somebody who is more of a threat than Joselu and maybe a centre-back then that would change.”

Their fellow Soccer Saturday pundits Paul Merson and Phil Thompson think that Rafael Benitez’s side just have enough to avoid the drop, with the former Liverpool defender highlighting the Spaniard’s experience as key.

Mike Ashley is currently in talks over selling the club to Yorkshire-born businesswoman Amanda Staveley and the deal could provide Benitez with a £30m January budget, according to The Guardian.
