Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Everton midfielder Andre Gomes this summer.
Matt Le Tissier told Soccer Saturday (broadcast on Sky Sports; 6/4 from 12:00pm) that Everton supporters should be worried about the likelihood of keeping Andre Gomes amid reports that Tottenham want the midfielder this summer.
Gomes has been a superb addition to Marco Silva’s squad this season, and the Telegraph reported last week that the Toffees are hoping to strike a deal with Barcelona to keep the 25-year-old on a permanent basis.
However, the report added that Tottenham are planning to rival Everton for his signature, with Daniel Levy prepared to pay £30 million to land the Portuguese in the summer.
And Le Tissier hinted that the Toffees have got a very tough task on their hands if they hope to convince Gomes to return to Goodison Park when the likes of Spurs are also interested in signing him during the upcoming window.
“From what I’ve seen of him this season, he’s looked pretty impressive,” he told Soccer Saturday, when asked about Spurs’ reported interest. “Any player who’s on loan and he comes in and does well in the Premier League, he’s going to catch the eye of the big teams.
“If he’s performing well for Everton, then if there’s a chance to nick him off them, why wouldn’t teams that are above Everton try and do that if he’s been that impressive in the Premier League? For sure, Everton fans should be worried.”
It is definitely an attractive time to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The club have not made any new signings during the previous two windows and have sent a message to their rivals with the opening of their superb new stadium. Spurs are also on course to be able to offer Gomes Champions League football next term.
Everton’s form meanwhile, has picked up in recent weeks and they now find themselves one point off seventh after winning three games in a row. However, the 15 point gap to Manchester United in sixth may be a concern that could make a big difference if Gomes has to choose between returning to Merseyside or joining Spurs this summer.
