Matt Ingram is likely to be considered as QPR’s no.1 with Alex Smithies set for move to Premier League new boys Cardiff City.

Matt Ingram has a perfect opportunity to win over the Queens Park Rangers faithful if manager Steve McClaren decides to promote him to first choice goalkeeper.

The 24-year-old signed from Wycombe Wanderers in January 2016 and has played second fiddle to Alex Smithies but with the former Huddersfield ‘keeper set to leave, a new opportunity might have just presented itself for Ingram.

Standing at 6’3″, the shot-stopper rose to prominence at Adams Park and caught the attention of QPR but Ingram has found it difficult to dislodge Smithies in between the sticks. However, as reported by HITC Sport, the former Huddersfield Town goalie is set for a move away from Loftus Road for £4 million.

It’s a pivotal time in Ingram’s career as many QPR fans would expect a replacement goalkeeper to be at least considered but the majority of fans would most likely want to see Ingram given a fair chance. There’s plenty of food for thought for manager Steve McClaren in that respect but with Rangers not expecting much in the transfer market overall, it’ll be wise to fully support Ingram as no.1 choice.

The Championship side are expected to mirror their 2017/18 campaign in terms of final position but a new manager and the potential loss of one of the league’s best goalies could make things that little bit harder but Ingram should be chomping at the bit to impress.

Joe Lumley is also considered to be competing with Ingram but the former Wycombe man offers more experience that’ll likely make him more appealing to McClaren.

April’s derby defeat to Brentford saw Ingram save brilliantly from a penalty despite having concussion which already shows glimpses of what he can offer. Vastly experienced in the EFL, now is the time for Ingram to prove himself and show QPR fans there is hope after Smithies.

Ingram was loaned out to Northampton Town last season where he made 20 league appearances for the Cobblers.
