Swansea ace Grimes struggled during his season-long loan spell at Leeds.

Swansea City man Matt Grimes earned a place in WhoScored’s Team of the Week following his side’s 0-0 draw against Wigan and a 3-0 win over QPR – so did Leeds United make a mistake?
Grimes, 23, has featured on the left side of defence for the past two matches for Graham Potter’s side, firstly as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 system before playing on at left-back in a four-man defence against Wigan.
Naturally a central midfielder or indeed a number 10, Grimes was brought to Elland Road from Swansea on a season-long loan under Garry Monk during the 2016-17 season.
But during his spell under former Swansea boss Monk at Leeds, Grimes struggled as Leeds went within a whisker of finishing in the top six of the Championship. He managed just 12 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.
Since Swansea’s relegation to the Championship, Grimes has been a consistent member of Potter’s side, playing in 10 of his side’s 11 league games – with the majority coming in his natural position.
But after being named in the Team of the Week, should Leeds have considered playing Grimes on the left side of defence to maximise his potential?
There were signs that the technically-gifted midfielder boasted the quality to impress in the Championship, certainly after a decent campaign with Blackburn Rovers the season before his spell at Leeds.
But Monk should have given Grimes a chance on the left side of defence in order to bring the best out of him and who knows, he could have earned a permanent deal at Elland Road had he been given a go at left-back.
