Swansea midfielder’s loan spell at Leeds United turned into a wasted year of his career.
Matt Grimes arrived at Leeds United last summer with high hopes when he linked up with his former Swansea boss Garry Monk.
With a Championship spell at Blackburn already behind him, Grimes hoped to become an instant replacement for Lewis Cook at Leeds who had just been sold to Bournemouth.
Unfortunately Grimes’ loan spell turned into a disaster, with Garry Monk showing no faith in him after a handful of average performances early on.
Grimes was outshone by teenage talent Ronaldo Vieira and made only one Championship start. Six substitute appearances followed, but in total he managed a paltry 153 minutes of football.
Leeds fans wrote him off as a flop, and perhaps rightly so, but it is accurate also to say that Grimes was not given a proper chance.
Now he is bidding to restart his stalled career at League One side Northampton Town, having moved to the Cobblers late in the transfer window.
He has made one start so far, already equalling his Leeds tally, and the 22-year-old is hoping his selection will continue.
The bad news is that the manager he signed under, Justin Edinburgh, has already been sacked and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink appointed as his replacement.
The former Leeds striker will have to see if he can get Swansea’s former England under-21 international to showcase his real potential.
