The goalkeeper reveals he was feeling “suppressed” at Burnley after failing to make a single league appearance in two years.
New Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks has told the club’s official website that he is relieved at how well he has fitted in at Ibrox after his move from Burnley.
Gilks failed to play a single league game in two years at Turf Moor, with his only two appearances for the Lancashire club coming in cup competitions.
It was a difficult time for the Scottish stopper, who failed to dislodge number one Tom Heaton, and he admitted that he found himself feeling “suppressed”.
However, the 34-year-old has insisted that he feels much more at home at Rangers since his arrival at fortnight ago and is clearly relishing the prospect of a fresh start.
Gilks told the club’s website: “I had been a bit quiet at Burnley so I have two years to come out! I haven’t been that quiet here and that is a bit more me, I am a bit more jovial.
“I found it hard to be like that at Burnley, I don’t really know why. I had just gone into a team that had been promoted to the Premier League and I was on the fringes of that at first and I maybe felt a bit suppressed.
“This 100% feels like a better fit for me, I can just be myself. I have fitted great, I knew a lot of the lads from playing with Scotland and other clubs and I knew big Davie Weir and Jim Stewart and the gaffer is brilliant.”
Gilks will compete with last season’s first choice Wes Foderingham for the number one spot this season, and will be desperate to return to regular first-team action after his Burnley frustration.
Foderingham will be a hard man to dislodge though; the former Swindon Town man made 50 appearances in all competitions and was generally a consistently impressive performer for the Gers.
