Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks has told the club’s official website that his rivalry with Wes Foderingham is a friendly one.

The goalkeeper arrived at Ibrox this summer as one of ten new signings in a busy summer transfer window for Mark Warburton.

He has had to sit on the sidelines for the majority of this season, with Wes Foderingham having continued at the Gers number one this year.

His chances have largely come in the cup competitions, with him featuring four times in the Gers run to the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

It would be easy to imagine that the rivalry between himself and Foderingham is a fierce one but Gilks insists that is not the case.

“There is a friendly rivalry between Wes and I, if you will,” he told the club’s official website.

“You have to work together every day and we are separate from the group for 35-40 minutes before we are involved with them.”

“So we have to work together daily, I have to warm him up when he plays and vice versa so there is a mutual respect there. You give your all for whoever is playing and support them.”

Gilks will be hoping to keep his place when Rangers take on Celtic in that Scottish League Cup semi-final this weekend.

The Gers are keen to prove a point in the game, especially after Celtic’s 5-1 win in the first meeting between the two sides earlier this season.

Mark Warburton is likely to want to play his full strength team as a result, though, and that could perhaps see Gilks miss out again to Foderingham.
