Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are England’s best two hopes of winning The Open Championship.

Of course, Fitzpatrick already has one major championship to his name after his US Open victory in 2022.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood is still in search of his very first major win.

There is nothing more that Matt Fitzpatrick or Tommy Fleetwood would love than to win The Open Championship this week at Birkdale.

Fitzpatrick’s game is in great shape ahead of The Open, and he has clearly taken huge strides in 2026.

However, Fleetwood’s 2026 season has been fairly underwhelming, and he would admit that himself.

Despite that, it would be no surprise to see the Southport native contend this week at Royal Birkdale.

Matt Fitzpatrick says how he feels about Tommy Fleetwood ahead of The Open

Fitzpatrick sat down for his pre-Open Championship press conference on Monday afternoon at Royal Birkdale.

The Englishman was asked by one reporter how well he knows Tommy Fleetwood.

Fitzpatrick responded by saying just how much he respects the 35-year-old from Southport.

I don’t know anyone who would say a bad word about Tommy, Fitzpatrick said.

He’s such a great guy. For me, growing up I didn’t really see much of Tommy. We didn’t play in the same circles and stuff. He was a little bit older for me. He was always kind of ahead of his time in England golf, I would say. That was kind of the big thing there.

Any time I’ve had a good result, he’s always saying congrats, and he’s always great fun to play with. I mean, the biggest thing is just in those team rooms at Ryder Cup, just always so supportive and great to be around.

Tommy Fleetwood’s time could be now

Fleetwood is clearly an incredibly nice person.

He’s a great golfer as well, and there probably isn’t anyone who deserves an Open Championship more than him.

The 35-year-old is more than good enough to win a major championship, but does he have the mentality required when coming down the stretch on a Sunday?

Only time will tell in that regard.

One thing’s for sure, he will have the entire crowd behind him at Royal Birkdale this week.

And if Matt Fitzpatrick doesn’t have a chance of winning The Open Championship himself, there is no doubt that he would love to see his good friend Tommy Fleetwood lift the claret jug.
