Attack-minded Wolves wing-back had missed several chances to find the net this season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers wing-back Matt Doherty has expressed his delight after scoring his first goal of the season in the 2-0 Championship victory over Reading on Saturday.
Doherty has frequently been deployed as a right wing-back for Wolves this season and has got forward with regularity, although his finishing has let him down on some occasions.
Against Reading, however, the 25-year-old was on the scoresheet along with Ivan Cavaleiro as Wolves reclaimed their position at the top of the Championship.
Doherty told the club’s official website: “I have missed some good chances this season so it was nice to finally get a goal.
“I wouldn’t say it had been playing on my mind – but I like to score goals or create goals.
“I have not as many assists as I have the last few seasons and it is always nice to contribute in that way.
“I managed to get my head down and swing through it – I felt as sharp as (Helder) Costa at that moment!”
Doherty will hope that he will be able to make further attacking contributions for Wolves this season, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s team aim to earn promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship.
Wolves have an intriguing fixture coming up on Wednesday night as they host Leeds United, who are determined to secure a place in the play-offs this season.
Doherty, meanwhile, could have a very important part to play for Wolves in the remainder of the campaign as, in addition to pushing forwards often, he is tasked with offering protection to his side’s three-man defence.
Wolves have been largely resilient at the back so far this season and have conceded just 15 goals in the Championship but know that they must continue to perform consistently if they are to earn promotion.
