Matt Damon was scrolling through social media when he came across the story about Jon Jones spending a night out partying before taking down six heavyweight stars the next day, and it left him stunned.

The Hollywood actor appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he spoke about his long-standing passion for fighting. Their conversation covered a range of topics, from his meeting with Henry Cejudo to Rogan’s thoughts on how the UFC could improve its current business structure.

At one point in their chat, Damon mentioned a video he had seen of Brendan Schaub describing a visit to Jones’ training camp. Schaub claimed that not only did he get handled by ‘Bones’, but so did five other top-level fighters.

While Damon and Rogan were talking about some of the sport’s best ever, the Oscar winner mentioned a story he had come across on social media that highlighted Jones’ legendary training sessions.

He could not remember exactly where he had heard it at first, but it was later confirmed to have come from Brendan Schaub.

“I saw a thing on my Instagram feed of a fighter and I don’t know who it was, but he was a heavyweight,” the actor said.

“And he goes ‘I had the chance to spar with Jon Jones and to work with Jon Jones. I knew about it months ahead of time. I got my nutrition, everything was absolutely flawless, I got, you know, my sleep, everything was on.’

“So he goes ‘I show up at the gym that morning, me and five other guys and [Jones] comes in, I think he went to sleep at four in the morning or something’. He was out all night, and he goes, ‘he ran through us all.’

Rogan immediately recognised it as Schaub’s tale and pointed out what it revealed about the different levels within the sport.

“Brendan was a top 10 heavyweight,” the host said. “And Jon wasn’t even a heavyweight. Jon was a light heavyweight in that division and still managed to take everyone apart.”

Schaub also claimed that Jones’ warm-up before taking on these fighters was not anything structured. Instead, he just loosened up by swinging his arms around before getting started.
