Rangers fans would have expected the team to finish at least second in the Scottish Premiership this season, but they are likely to fail to do that.

The Gers are third in the league table at the moment with 51 points from 30 matches, as many as 10 points behind second-placed Aberdeen.

One of the reasons why the Ibrox outfit are so far behind Derek McInnes’s side is their lack of goals.

Rangers have scored just 43 goals in 30 league matches so far this season – Heart of Midlothian in fifth have bagged 50, while Aberdeen have found the net 60 times.

It is clear that for Pedro Caixinha’s side to challenge for the runners-up spot or to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic next season, they need to score goals. One player who could help them in that endeavour is Matt Crooks.

Crooks is 23 years of age and can operate as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder. The former Huddersfield Town man, currently on loan at Scunthorpe United in League One in England, has spoken of his inclination to score goals.

“It was nice, but it was good to get the win,” Crooks told Scunthorpe’s official website after the 3-2 win against Bradford City at home in the league last month.

“I’ll take any goal as it comes, so it was nice to get another one, and hopefully I can now get a few more.

“Everyone loves scoring goals, but if I do find myself in those sort of positions I do try and take my chances.”

Crooks was on target last weekend as well, finding the net in Scunthorpe’s 3-1 defeat to Millwall away from home in League One.

Rangers manger Caixinha should be looking to integrate Crooks into the team when he returns from his loan spell at the end of the season.

The former Accrington Stanley man is a talented player, and he should be given a fair chance at the Gers. A few goals from midfield could make a huge difference for the team.
