Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has raved about Joel Matip on the club’s official website.
Klopp cannot believe that there are some who still question the Liverpool central defender.
The Liverpool boss has said that the 30-year-old Cameroonian is an incredible footballer.
Klopp told Liverpool’s official website about Matip: “Look, I cannot help people who don’t see the quality of Joel Matip.
“That’s true, he was a bit unlucky in the past with an injury here and there – maybe not always the most difficult things but he is a big boy, a big player, tall and it can look from time to time a bit edgy or whatever.
“But he is an incredible player, he was always an incredible player since he joined us at least. So that’s really good.”
Klopp has also praised Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.
The German boss said about Mane: “Sadio looks really good, he looks really sharp. I know we talk about these things when a striker misses some chances, but that he has the amount of chances he has, the amount of finishes he has, that’s actually the important stuff.
“Sadio is in a good moment; a really good moment physically and mentally as well, so really confident and you can see that. A player misses a chance and doesn’t look desperate or whatever, he has a smile on his face and he knows, ‘I could have done this or this better…’ and all these kind of things.
“It’s all good for the moment but Sadio is an exceptional player so he has to perform exceptional because this is the standard we expect from him and he usually delivers.”
Important player for Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk is one of the best central defenders in the world and is a key figure at Liverpool.
The Netherlands international gets praised a lot, and rightly so.
However, we should not forget Matip and how important he is to this Liverpool team.
Yes, the 30-year-old has had injury problems during his time at Liverpool, but, as Klopp has noted, his importance cannot be underlined.
Matip is at the top of his game now, and he will have to be at his best this season for Liverpool to win the Premier League and the Champions League.
The former Schalke star has scored five goals in 99 Premier League appearances so far in his career.
Liverpool really missed Matip when he was injured for a large of last season.
The Anfield faithful will hope that the defender stays fit this time around.
