Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich is enjoying a fine start to the season under Marcelo Bielsa – and his father has explained how the Argentinian is playing his part.
Klich, 28, joined Leeds from Dutch side FC Twente last summer, but found his playing time limited under Thomas Christiansen before being sent back to the Netherlands in a loan deal with Utrecht.
The Pole impressed with Utrecht, and was given a chance to rebuild his Leeds career under a new manager in Bielsa – and that’s a decision which is certainly paying dividends right now.
Klich, playing in a three-man midfielder alongside Kalvin Phillips and Samu Saiz, has been superb so far this term, hitting three goals and one assist in his first six Championship outings this term.
Cast aside by Christiansen but thriving under Bielsa, Klich looks set to play a key role in Leeds’ promotion hopes this season, which few could have predicted at the start of the year.
In fact, Klich has been so impressive that he has earned a recall to the Poland national team, and he featured against Italy at the weekend before potentially facing Ireland tonight.
Now, Klich’s father Wojciech has told Wyborcza in Poland that Bielsa is playing a major part in his son’s improvement, noting that the Argentinian is instructing him to play with his head and work hard defensively, as well as doing everything at full speed – hallmarks of the Leeds side under Bielsa so far.
“First of all, playing with the head and working on the defensive game, in this aspect he has improved a lot,” said Wojciech. “And he has to do everything at full speed, on the run. Marcelo Bielsa instils such things into him,” he added.
