Leeds United booked their spot in the next round of the League Cup with a shootout win over the Clarets.
Speaking to LUTV, Mateusz Klich has suggested that “stupid fouls” were among the reasons why Leeds United had to book their spot in the next round of the League Cup via a penalty shootout.
Pablo Hernandez put the Whites 2-1 ahead at Turf Moor by converting a stoppage-time penalty in Tuesday’s third-round trip to Burnley, minutes after Chris Wood also scored from the spot following a foul in the box from Gaetano Berardi.
However, Ronaldo Vieira conceded a sloppy foul moments before the final whistle and Robbie Brady made Leeds pay the price with a superb free kick.
It worked out for Thomas Christiansen’s side in the end after securing their passage with the shootout, but Klich, a £1.5 million signing from FC Twente, suggested that such drama could and should have been avoided if not for the cheap fouls.
“I would say unlucky, maybe stupid fouls, I don’t know. The only thing that matters is that we were through in the end and we’re just waiting for a good draw for us,” he told LUTV, when asked how it felt to twice surrender the lead in the final five minutes.
The Poland international midfielder, who scored his penalty in the shootout, went on to reveal that he wanted to take the spot-kick which Hernandez tucked away, but the Spaniard was having none of it.
He added: “Yeah I wanted to take the one in the game but Pablo has been here longer so I have to respect that. It’s no problem with me. If I can take penalties I will take them.”
The Championship leaders resume their league commitments on Saturday with a visit of Ipswich Town, and head coach Christiansen will hope that the two-hour match in midweek will not have an adverse affect on his players come the weekend.
