Leeds United are in the race for promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has told Przeglad Sportowy in his native Poland that he thinks the club’s fans are ‘tired’ of the Championship.
The Whites beat Derby County 2-0 at Elland Road on Friday night, keeping their place at the top of the Championship table thanks to goals from Kemar Rofoe and Jack Harrison.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men may have lost twice before that win over the Rams, but they still have a healthy four-point lead at the top of the table.
Leeds are in their best position yet to return to the Premier League after a near 15-year absence, and the challenge is now to keep their form going until the end of the season.
Bielsa is masterminding Leeds’ incredible season, but the Whites have been known to fall away in the second half of the season, most recently under Garry Monk in the 2016-17 campaign.
Leeds currently look unlikely to fall in a similar way, but fans may still be fearing that their side will be so well-positioned but still fail to return to the top flight.
Now, midfielder Mateusz Klich has been asked about that situation, with Polish sports daily Przeglad Sportowy asking him whether missing out on promotion would spark a ‘hard luck’ reaction or one of dissatisfaction.
Klich predicted that it would be a very negative reaction as fans are ‘tired’ of the Championship, but he did make sure to praise the Leeds fans too, suggetsing that they give positive support – unlikely some fans in Poland.
“Definitely the second reaction,” said Klich. “The pressure is very high, because many of our fans remember Leeds from the Premier League or the Champions League, although it has been years since then. Our supporters are tired of the Championship. Only that we have positive support [and not like in a Polish club, when the fans announced: “Ekstraklasa or death!]” he added.
