Mateusz Klich barely played for Leeds United under Thomas Christiansen.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Mateusz Klich has opened up on his relationship with Thomas Christiansen and revealed that one slip was the beginning of the end for him under the former Leeds United boss.
The 27-year-old midfielder was sent on loan to FC Utrecht in the Netherlands earlier this year after struggling for first-team opportunities under Christiansen, who started him in only one Championship game since his arrival on a £1.5 million deal from FC Twente last summer.
Klich’s only start came in the 3-1 defeat by Cardiff City in September, where the Poland international’s slip contributed to the Bluebirds earning a 1-0 lead that night.
Klich only earned 21 minutes of Championship football in the four months that followed prior to his loan to the Netherlands, and the in-form midfielder says that slip was the reason for his lack of action.
“In the midfield I slipped and lost the ball, after which we conceded a goal. Then the coach refused to pick me, because of one mistake that I couldn’t do much about,” he told Voetbal International.
I became very angry with him after that and it was over for me for Leeds. I wouldn’t play anymore under that coach.”
Christiansen was fired by Leeds in February and replaced by Paul Heckingbottom, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Klich – who revealed this past weekend that he will be returning to West Yorkshire this summer when his loan expires – fares better under the former Barnsley boss.
