Mateo Joseph Fernandez has posted on Instagram after the teenager completed a move from Espanyol to Leeds United on Tuesday. The Spanish wonderkid has penned a contract until the summer of 2025.
Leeds have decided to bolster their Under-23 side in the striker department, as Joe Gelhardt continues his surge into the first team. It leaves a gaping hole in Mark Jacksonโs side, and the Whites have moved swiftly.
In comes Fernandez, who has seemingly caught the eye at Elland Road after his excellent form for Espanyolโs Under-19 side last season. Despite playing an age group up, he scored a very impressive 14 goals in 21 appearances.
That has convinced Leeds to move. The Whites have decided to bring in another attacker to rival Max Dean in the final third, with Sam Greenwood converted into an attacking midfielder. Fernandez posted on Instagram.
Fernandez posts on Instagram: Next on the agenda, score for Leeds 23โs
His post is a good start to his Leeds life. Certainly, it is more than just the bog-standard comments a player makes when he joins. Fernandez says he immediately โfelt at homeโ when completing a move to Elland Road.
With fans on side, Fernandez will now be tasked with scoring goals in the highest tier of Under-23 โ or reserve-team โ football. At just 18, it might take Fernandez the rest of the season to adapt to a new country.
But certainly, next on the agenda for the Spaniard is gaining regular game time in the 23โs side, scoring goals and looking to follow Gelhardt. Jacksonโs side face Sunderlandโs 23โs in the Premier League Cup on Wednesday night.
